Nawaz Sharif Kidney Hospital Swat starts functioning

PESHAWAR: Nawaz Sharif Kidney Hospital (NSKH), a state of the art health facility established by the Punjab Government in the picturesque Minglawar town on Kalam-Swat Road in Swat district, has formally started functioning.

Except radiology and nephrology, all other departments have become functional with the Out-Patient Department (OPD) being visited by patients suffering from nephrology, kidney and other related fatal diseases coming from all over the province, including Malakand division, said Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Ghulam Rehman Khan.

Talking to APP, spread over an area of 96,330 square feet area the hospital building had been constructed by Punjab Hospitals Trust in two phases at the cost of Rs 428.98 million. All modern medical and surgical equipment used in diagnostic services like CT Scan, MRI, Ultrasound, OPD, male and female wards, operation theatre, dialyses unit and other facilities had been provided.

About 47 kanal land had been acquired for residential facilities for doctors and other staff of the two-storey hospital with two basements and vast parking area, he added.

Dr Khan said the OPD was opened in September this year. However, due to low power voltage problem, radiology and nephrology departments could not be made fubctional. “We have approached the Punjab Hospital Trusts for the provision of automatic voltage regulators, which are required for running high-powered medical and surgical equipment and same are expected to be provided soon,” he added.

He said NSKH was the biggest kidney hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and it could be compared with any state of the art hospital in the country on account of medical services.

He said currently 24 medical officers against 28 sanctioned posts were providing medical and diagnostic services to patients. Two consultant urologists, one each cardiologist, anesthetist and pathologist, besides other necessary staff were also there to take care of patients.

Dr Khan said the people of Swat, Dir, Chitral, Malakand, Shangla and adjacent districts of KP, particularly the patients of lungs, kidney and other related diseases, would be largely facilitated from the 110-bed hospital.

Dr Said Ali Khan, District Health Officer Swat, told APP that Punjab Trust of Hospital would bear the non-salary expenditure for two years while the KP Government would provide funds for the salaries of doctors and other staff.

“Institute of Kidney Disease in Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), Peshawar is overloaded due to high number of patients coming from far flung areas of the province, including Malakand division and Swat,” he said. Nawaz Sharif Kidney Hospital would now share this burden, he added.

The patients of Malakand division and Swat district would now get quality treatment near their homes. he said.

PML-N MPA Akbar Hayat Khan termed the NSKH a gift from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the people of KP, especially Malakand division.

The prime minister, he said, was taking keen interest in the development of KP and such a modern hospital reflected his deep commitment and care for its people.

The KP people now knew that who was working hard to solve their problems and who was deceiving them in the name of “change”, he added. –APP
